This pathfinder has been crafted specifically for use in the Florida International University network of libraries. It is focused on the origins and distinctives of the Plymouth Brethren in relation to other Christian denominations.

The Plymouth Brethren is one of the most influential denominations in Christendom. In fact, it has been argued that it is the single most influential denomination relative to its size. Some of the commonly held doctrines of the Plymouth Brethren within Christian theology include: the Dispensational hermeneutic, adherence to a weekly Breaking of Bread service, devotion to evangelical missions and the Priesthood of All Believers.

Note that the denominational label “Plymouth Brethren” is assigned to this group for convenience purposes only. One of the core beliefs of the group is that divisions in the Church are not biblical. Therefore, they refer to themselves as simply “brethren” or “believers” and call their churches “assemblies.”

John Nelson Darby is credited as the founder of the Plymouth Brethren. He was an Anglican curate in Ireland and began “breaking bread” with like-minded individuals around 1827 in Dublin. The first, and largest, assembly founded in England was in the town of Plymouth, which is the source of the denominational title.

Active leaders in promoting the Plymouth Brethren movement and theology in North America through the mid 20th century include Harry A. Ironside and Cyrus I. Scofield.

In addition to being the product of a time in history, the Plymouth Brethren also arose from theological distinctions. Since this is the case, I suggest searches be conducted using both historical and theological key terms. Some of these terms include prominent figures as well as prominent doctrines, such as:

Breaking of Bread Cyrus I. Scofield Dispensationalism Harry A. Ironside John Nelson Darby Lord’s Supper Plymouth Brethren Premillenial Dispensationalism Rapture

For further clarification, note that I use the word "distinctive" synonymously with "characteristic." All of the principles mentioned are held by the Plymouth Brethren, though these principles may also be shared among other denominations. For instance, the Baptists also demonstrate devotion to missions, Lutherans have also expoused the priesthood of all believers, etc. In essence, these distinctives serve as a list of commonly held beliefs within Plymouth Brethren circles.
