Religion and PhilosophyReligious Studies - tuotuofly - 墨·色

“Know thyself…Nothing in excess.”
Philosophy literally means the “love of wisdom”. Another definition of philosophy looks at the ultimate questions it typically focuses on. That is:

1. What is real (metaphysics)?
2. What is right and wrong (ethics)?
3. What is reasonable belief (epistemology, logic and critical thinking)?
The word religion is based on the Latin religio which means “to tie” or “bind”. The equivalent word in Sanskrit is yoga, meaning “to join”. A broader definition of religion could be as follows: “a system of belief and action concerning the ultimate reality (usually god/s) or what people regard to be the greatest good and source of duty and happiness.”
By focusing on the “Four Rs” above, the Religion and Philosophy Department provides students with the opportunity to freely inquire into a rich horizon of ideas that extend across the humanities, sciences and arts. In addition to helping students schematise the various worldviews and the grounds by which they are justified, the Department provides a systematic introduction to logical, rhetorical and grammatical technical skills. The Department also delivers cross-curricula Critical Thinking courses in the Upper Sixth and at Key Stage 3 and helps facilitate the Philosophy, Politics and Economics Society. Together, these academic skills enable our students to flourish at Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)
The Curriculum at KS3 has three overarching themes which could be roughly described as historical, metaphysical and ethical. In Year 7, we start with an introduction to philosophy and then historical depth studies of Judaism, Christianity and Hinduism. In Year 8 we investigate Buddhist metaphysics, the epistemologies of mystics, Plato, Aristotle and Descartes, and the evolution of the Christian Church. In Year 9 we look at materialist and sceptic writings (Marx, Nietzsche and Dawkins), Islam and the sociology of religion (Weber and Durkheim), normative ethical theory (Egoism, Natural Law, Utilitarianism and Virtue Ethics) and the Holocaust and the problem of evil. A personal extended essay project is completed at the end of each year and requires the boys to apply critical thinking, independent study and research skills.
GCSE (Years 10 to11)
GCSE Philosophy of Religion and Ethics provides students with an introduction to important issues at the heart of contemporary debates concerning philosophy, ethics, religion, politics, science and law. The major theme for Year 10 is the Philosophy of Religion. In this module we critically evaluate the metaphysical and epistemological arguments developed by medieval and modern Islamic scholars concerning cosmology, human nature (anthropology), the afterlife (eschatology) and the problem of evil (theodicy). The central theme of Year 11 is moral philosophy where we apply Christian and secular normative theory to medical ethics and human rights issues.
Skills: The subject will assist students to map out the metaphysical and ethical beliefs of the major worldviews (the Abrahamic and Eastern religions, materialism and scepticism); analyse, critique and construct logical arguments about them, and hone their persuasive and extended essay writing skills.
A Level (Years 12 to 13)
A Level Philosophy and Ethics is a history of philosophy survey course. It provides an overview of the major currents of philosophical thought in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Modernity. In doing so, it explicitly focuses on metaphysics and ethics (two of the oldest and perennial foci of Western philosophy) and the arguments of influential Western intellectuals. Examples include: Sophocles, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, St Paul, Aquinas, Ockham, Montaigne, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Marx, Darwin, Nietzsche, Freud and Wittgenstein.
There are two modules at AS: Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. Philosophy of Religion examines Ancient Greek and Judeo-Christian influences on philosophy and Western thought. It does so through examining the epistemological and logical foundations of the traditional metaphysical and scientific arguments for and against the existence of God. The Ethics module examines classical normative moral theories and how coherently they produce ethical judgements about contemporary moral problems and dilemmas (i.e., medical ethics). The A2 course builds upon the former through the study of the philosophy of language, the philosophy of science and epistemology as applied to the mind-body problem, the free will/determinism debate and the nature of God. In Ethics we study the impact of developmental psychology upon ethics, the 20th century “revolution” in moral philosophy, Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics and environmental and business ethics.
Skills: The subject’s explicit focus on logic and critical analysis lends itself naturally to highly transferrable critical thinking skills across the Curriculum. Its rich and technical vocabulary and undergraduate style persuasive essays provide our students with an excellent foundation for university level research.
Department Ethos
All in all, the Department's ethos is both academic and pastoral. In other words, while we recognise the importance of a rigorous technical education, the Department’s pedagogy is also designed to help assist the boys to personally respond to the quotation at the top of the page.
