William Blake and The Divine Comedy

William Blake and The Divine Comedy - tuotuofly - 墨·色

In the mid-1880′s, William Blake was commissioned by his friend and patron John Linnell to create a series of illustrations to Dante’s Divine Comedy. Over one hundred drawings were started, but only about forty of them were close to completion when Blake died a mere three years after the project began. Blake’s vision brings out the twisted, dramatic beauty of Dante’s work. I included just a few of the illustrations in the series below, but click here if you want to see a more complete set.

Quotes of the Moment

"My mind is my weapon. My brother has his sword, King Robert has his warhammer, and I have my mind... and a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge. That's why I read so much, Jon Snow."
---George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones)

“The poet, therefore, is truly the thief of fire. He is responsible for humanity, for animals even; he will have to make sure his visions can be smelled, fondled, listened to; if what he brings back from beyond has form, he gives it form; if it has none, he gives it none. A language must be found…of the soul, for the soul and will include everything: perfumes, sounds colors, thought grappling with thought”
---Arthur Rimbaud

“It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.”
--- Oscar Wilde
